Remember the extravagant dushalas and angarkha’s from Rekha’s legendary movie Umroajaan?
Ah….What a treat to eyes those lavish costumes were.
Sabina Rehman of Aabnoos Couture has skilfully recreated reminisce of the nawabi old world charm in her latest collection of dushalas and angarkhas which she aptly named – ‘Itar’.
Itar because this collection exudes an opulent whiff of royalty and elegance.
Angarkhas
The term angarkha is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘angrakshak’, which is a long tunic, overlapped and tied to either the left or right shoulder with strings of fabric.
Keeping the style and flavour of the original dress intact, Sabina has adeptly designed the elaborate ankarkhas into a wearable garment which can be worn as a semi formal/formal dress.
Skipping the heavy brocade, she has chosen lighter fabrics ranging from cotton, self and block prints to bandhej and crepes’.
Talking about her new collection, Sabina says, “My angarkhas are an eclectic mix of classic and contemporary. They can be a perfect pick for your day functions, mehnadi, sangeet and even for office parties around festivals. Although the garment itself carries elaborate detailing, gota patti boarders and ornate latkans (side strings) with trinkets and ghungroos but teaming them with loads colourful glass bangles, juttis and dark kohled eyes would complete the look so perfectly.”
Few of her designs from the collection are featured below.
Doshalas
Doshalas have been so much in trend this season. It is a type of shawl or a broad stole, only that it is way more flamboyant and dressy!
They give an affluent and graceful feel to any suit or sari and complete the ensemble without much effort.
For this collection, doshalas have been made on silk and velvet using dabka, sequins, stones and resham thread work. The colour palate range from powder pink to midnight blue, black, maroons and the likes. The diversity of this garment is such that it can be even carried on western outfits with élan.
The collection is already a huge hit amongest clients and Sabina is planning to add more farshi ghararas in it.

Client Stories
One of her client brought her mother’s beautiful crepe bandhej sari which she doesn’t wear but is really fond of. Sabina turned that sari into a splendid angarkha!
Another one says, “These dresses from the new collection bring royalty to our wardrobes. I feel nothing less than a princess wearing the floor length angarkha with long flowy dupattas.”
