Anarkali Suits – Saleem’s Choice & Mine Too!

Personally I am a huge fan of ethnic wear. Most women with typical Indian body type are!

When worn in appropriate fit, fabric, style and cut, it wins over most of the designer western wear at formal, semi formal and informal occasions.

A familiar fashion adage says, when in doubt, wear black.

My mantra – when in doubt, go ethnic.

It is tried & trusted and one can hardly go wrong with it!

But of’course, you have to have a good concept of what to wear when and how?

Obviously it is not appropriate to attend a board meeting in an embellished salwar kameez but yes, a crisp solid, straight fit kurta with clean cuts in linen or silk worn with pencil pants will surely fit appropriately amidst the scene.

Talking more of Indian wear, I am also an immense anarkali enthusiast.

One, it hides my problem areas and second, it looks extremely classy, elegant and rich.

I prefer to wear them long, like really long (3-4 inches above ankles). It gives me a slim, elongated frame and falls beautifully on the body.

Be it a marriage function, festive occasion, cocktail party, casual outing or work – there is always an anarkali to fit the instance perfectly. The cut, style, material and flare has to be kept in consideration while choosing appropriately to suit the occasion and weather.

Light weight cottons with minimal flare in pastel colours and light print works bet for summers and as office wear.

Wherein silk, georgette and chiffon ones with work on them are GUD for party wear.

Anarkalis on chanderi and organza goes well for day functions.

Recently, I had to attend a function and was short of time to get an anarkali suit stitched.

But I knew where to head & pick a ready to wear one.

Yay & Nay of Wearing an Anarkali

When picking an anarkali, there are few do’s and don’ts to be kept in mind –

  • Try to keep the length long, nothing above mid calf
  • Go for georgette, chiffon and other flowly fabrics if you are on the heavier side
  • If you are short, go easy on flare and pick a single solid color
  • Heavy on chest and bulky frame ladies should pick anarkalis in which kalis start from the top and are not attached at the yoke below bustline
  • Carry long dupattas for elegant look
  • Wear heels
  • Keep the yoke long (3 inches below bust line) for a flatter tummy

I hope these tips on anarakali suits must have helped you.
